Be the change of Jesus

A sermon on “Be the change of Jesus” focuses on the concept that true and lasting change in the world is not accomplished by human effort alone, but by allowing Jesus to transform us from the inside out. As followers of Christ, we are called to embody the change that Jesus brings, living as new creations who reflect his character to the world. This spiritual transformation, empowered by the Holy Spirit, is what truly makes us agents of change in our communities and beyond.
Sermon: The change begins with Christ
Introduction
We often hear the phrase, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” It’s a noble idea, but for a moment, let’s consider a different perspective: “Be the change of Jesus.” What does it mean to be a vessel for the change that only Christ can bring? It means acknowledging that our own strength and willpower are insufficient and surrendering to the transformative power of God’s Spirit working within us.
1. The Source of True Change
Our world is in desperate need of change—peace instead of conflict, compassion instead of cruelty, love instead of hate. Yet, we are often disappointed when human efforts to bring about these changes fall short. This is because lasting change doesn’t start with us; it starts with God. He is the ultimate agent of transformation.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV): “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
    • This scripture reveals that in Christ, we are not just modified; we are fundamentally recreated. We are given a new nature and a new identity. The change we are to be is not a product of our own resolve, but a result of being in relationship with Jesus.
2. The Evidence of Our Changed Lives
When we become new creations in Christ, that inner change begins to manifest in our outer lives. Our actions and our very presence should reflect the light of Jesus to a world shrouded in darkness.
  • Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV): “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
    • Our changed lives are meant to be visible. The good works that flow from our transformed hearts are not for our own glory but to point others to the source of our change: our heavenly Father. The way we treat others, the forgiveness we offer, and the love we show all become tangible evidence of Jesus at work within us.
3. The Process of Ongoing Transformation
Being the change of Jesus is not a one-time event but a continuous journey of growth and sanctification. It requires a daily surrender to his will and a renewal of our minds.
  • Romans 12:2 (NIV): “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
    • This scripture provides a practical guide. To become the change of Jesus, we must resist the worldly patterns of selfishness and instead allow the Holy Spirit to change the way we think. This allows us to align our will with God’s and to truly live out his purpose.
Conclusion
So, if you want to be the change, look first to the cross. Allow Jesus to do his transforming work in your life and then go out and let his light shine through you. Don’t simply talk about change; embody the transformative power of Jesus. Be the change by being his hands, his feet, and his heart in the world. And as you do, you will not only see your own life renewed, but you will become a part of the greater story of redemption that is changing the world, one heart at a time. Amen.
